Saltmarsh vegetation alters tidal hydrodynamics of small estuaries

چکیده
Saltmarshes in most estuaries the UK and elsewhere are heavily exploited for numerous purposes including farming, fishing, recreation. In this study, a computational model was used to investigate impact of saltmarsh vegetation on tidal dynamics residual currents three distinctly different Wales, UK, order understand impacts marsh wider estuarine hydrodynamics. The estuaries, Mawddach, Taf Loughor, vary size, range, exposure, coverage. Tidal constituents were calculated using year-long simulation dynamics. discussed terms five important primary (M2, S2, N2, K1, O1) two shallow water (M4, MS4). results reveal that reduces amplitude both not only at proximity platforms but also estuary, mostly confined channels surrounding intertidal areas. Most notable changes observed middle upper estuary. Notable current velocities flat areas creeks which indicates have potential alter sediment transport hence estuary Our will be useful when making decisions restore, reclaim realign existing saltmarshes environmental, conservation socioeconomic purposes, or integrate them nature-based solutions flood erosion management.

Effects of Shoreline Dynamics on Saltmarsh Vegetation
We evaluated the impact of shoreline dynamics on fringing vegetation density at mid- and low-marsh elevations at a high-energy site in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Particularly, we selected eight unprotected shoreline stretches (75 m each) at a historically eroding site and measured their inter-annual lateral movement rate using the DSAS method for three consecutive years. We observed high inte...
متن کاملCatchment land use predicts benthic vegetation in small estuaries
Many estuaries are becoming increasingly eutrophic from human activities within their catchments. Nutrient loads often are used to assess risk of eutrophication to estuaries, but such data are expensive and time consuming to obtain. We compared the percent of fertilized land within a catchment, dissolved inorganic nitrogen loads, catchment to estuary area ratio and flushing time as predictors o...
متن کاملAsymptotic behavior of tidal damping in alluvial estuaries
[1] Tidal wave propagation can be described analytically by a set of four implicit equations, i.e., the phase lag equation, the scaling equation, the damping equation, and the celerity equation. It is demonstrated that this system of equations has an asymptotic solution for an infinite channel, reflecting the balance between friction and channel convergence. Subsequently, explicit expressions f...
